The show is taking place at Power Plant Studios and benefits Citizens for No Kill Philadelphia, an organization that works to ensure safety for homeless pets in the city. It looks like it’s going to be a GREAT show, taking place during Old City’s First Friday in Philly.

Join the action by creating and tagging treasuries (along with appropriate items) using the universal site tag, “EtsyEuro.” Now is a great time to consider offering international shipping and make sure your items can be found in Etsy’s Shop Local feature and Local Filter by filling in your country, city, and state. Be sure to choose an automatically suggested location for your listings to appear correctly in buying features that use location data to surface items.
Create and tag treasuries fitting March’s merchandising themes for a chance to have your collection featured on Etsy’s homepage or linked from promotional emails. Additionally, sharing these collections via your social networks during these relevant times will help increase traffic and engagement around your items and shop. Brick By Brick – Art Star

With Spring upon us, it’s the perfect time to travel into the big city and visit one of the landmarks in handmade goods, Art Star. Located in the Northern Liberties section of Philly, Art Star is a crisp and inviting mecca for handmade goodness.

It all began in 2003, as a craft show created by co-owners Megan Brewster and Erin Waxman, recent graduates of Tyler School of Art. The show was a success and merged perfectly into a retail shop to feature fabulous finds from around the country. The shop is now a staple of the neighborhood and they have built quite a reputation for themselves, being hailed as “the city’s first cutting edge craft shop” by Philadelphia Magazine.

A quick look through their inventory shows why. Erin and Megan are dedicated to showcasing the unique and meticulously created works of artists globally. The shop features everything from handmade greeting cards to one of a kind jewelry, original paintings and collages to affordable art prints, screen printed housewares to hand thrown pottery and so much more.

Staying true to it’s roots, Art Star still sponsors the craft show that started it all, thrown every summer on the waterfront at Penns Landing Great Plaza. This year’s show is May 14th & 15th and is guaranteed to be chock full of amazing handcrafted goods by some of the coolest folks around. Hundreds of artists and craftsmen apply every year, and Art Star selects only the best of the best to attend as vendors. Local eateries provide the perfect menu for hungry shoppers and a lineup of fabulous local musicians are on site throughout the day to entertain.

Vendor applications are are still being accepted through March 8th, so if you’re a local crafter be sure to check out the show’s site and get your application in soon!

Art Star is a true treasure to the indie craft scene in Philadelphia that should not be missed. As artists, we are blessed to have the steady support of local shops like Art Star, bringing the work of independent artists and craftsmen right into hands of eager shoppers. Just as they support us, we should support them! So, take a warm afternoon sometime soon and go visit Erin and Megan at Art Star. Your guaranteed to see something there that you can’t live without!

January has come and on and although winter weather continues in many regions, we’re moving closer to Spring this month!

Wholesale Wake-up Call

I took the WrapADoodle Swaddle Blankets to the Philadelphia Gift Show a couple of weeks ago.

As it turns out it just wasn’t the right venue for a baby item….it seemed that most of the buyers there were from home and garden shops, hair salons, and pharmacies. Many were there just walking around and looking for one reason or another.

But, people stopped and loved it, thought it was adorable, wanted to order them personally, etc.

Even though it wasn’t the optimum WrapADoodle clientele, had it been wholesale priced at $12.99 (would be – if made overseas) instead of 24.99 (is – since it’s made here) then there would have been about twenty stores FOR SURE who would have ordered it. And they would have ordered again and again. And it would be in stores all over the country.

So, my thinking cap is on. What do you think?

Happy New Year!

January is upon us – a new year and new selling opportunities. Etsy’s merchandising plans this month will focus on the New Year, winter fashions, winter escapes and Valentine’s Day

Here are some seasonal motifs to help you with inventory planning and promotion:

Resolutions: DIY projects, redecorating, fitness, organization. Anything that makes you think of new beginnings, fresh starts and renewal.

2011 Calendars: An organizational must. Etsy’s merchandising desk suggests classical styles, multifunctional versions and personalized takes — such as chalkboard surfaces.

Winter Fashion: Think ‘warm’ – outerwear, winter shoes and boots, weather resistant material and rich cozy fabrics. Think ‘winter accessories’ – mittens, gloves, legwarmers, hats, scarves, etc. And don’t forget jewelry and hair accessories to match the ‘warm’ theme in color and design.

International Vacations and Resort Wear: For those headed to tropic temps, think travel gear, luggage, carryalls, photography, preservation of memories, foreign languages and seasonal style. Elegant yet comfortable beachwear and formal dinner fashions and accessories.
